Chinese Design Concepts

What's in store at Madame Mao's Dowry?

All of the works we sell are original and we pride ourselves on the breadth of our large collections of Cultural Revolution propaganda posters and propaganda photographs from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. We also have a collection of Mao statues in a range of sizes and materials, as well as original Mao Period paintings and woodblock prints. Finally, we stock antique furniture selected for its aesthetical appeal and beauty in originality.

Alongside these we create our own pieces that harmonise the old with modern design. Our golden brick tables are an example of how we intend to integrate traditional material with contemporary aesthetics. Our own brand accessories make use of Chinese crafts with a modern decorative spin. Hand-painted glass balls featuring cityscapes, and enamelware printed with youthful takes on revolutionary slogans are among our unique collection.  Visit Madame Mao's design page here!

To make our concept work we do not rely solely on our own efforts, but have in store a selection of works by other artists and designers who creatively use ideas from Modern China. These include clothing designers, ceramic designers and local contemporary artists whose works comfortably interact with our own collections to provide our audience with an insight into the foundations of contemporary design in China.
